The early music ensemble, Capella Imperialis, founded in 2014 in Vienna by Marelize Gerber, comprises young, international musicians, inspired through a common goal - to interpret early music works both in a unique and authentic way. The performance of the works is closely connected to the historical performance practice and the particular sound idiom in which it originated.
The driving force behind the choice of works is their interest in rediscovering forgotten composers and making their works known to the public. The cast varies depending on the type and size of the chosen works.
Capella Imperialis made their debut in the Wiener Konzerthaus at the renowned Resonanzen Festival for Early Music during January 2015.

'Between heaven and earth' - Baroque Gala Concert, Olecko & Gołdap, Poland
"The excellent austrian soprano, Marelize Gerber shared the stage with Capella Imperialis, a baroque orchestra comprising international specialists in early music. Sopranos like Mrs. Gerber are rarely heard in this part of the world. The audiences in Olecko and Gołdap could imagine for one moment what concerts in the famous concert halls of the world like the Vienna Musikverein must sound like."

Vienna / Konzerthaus. VORSPIEL "CAPELLA IMPERIALIS" 19.1.2015
"A very young ensemble presented themselves. "Capella Imperialis" was founded by Marelize Gerber, a lyrical soprano with roots as a violinist and Peter Peinstingl in 2014. Congratulations! Determined to become a singer, Marelize Gerber came to Vienna from South Africa, where she studied voice with Mimi Coertse. Very soon she found her own niche - not the opera, certainly not the operetta that they wanted to force her into, but Early Music. It was clear that her voice felt most at home in genres of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. In the Vienna Chamber Opera she often featured in baroque operas. Her interpretation of the young Nerone in Agrippina is simply unforgettable!
The challenging program in the Berio Hall tonight could just as well be played in the Mozart Hall.
First on the program was Johann Joseph Fux's (1660-1741), Ouverture Nr. 3 in C-Major for strings and basso continuo, followed by 'Laetare turba caelitum' for soprano, violins and basso continuo – a piece filled with ornaments and a long recitative. This was followed by another difficult piece for soprano by Antonio Caldara (1671-1736) 'Salve Regina', with the addition of a Viola da gamba and Violone to a similar cast of instruments. 'Regina coeli' by Kaiser Joseph I (1679-1711) was exceptionally difficult and effective. Alternating with the arias, Capella Imperialis performed marvelous chamber music compositions by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704) a sonata in D-Major for strings and basso continuo as well as 'Lamento sopra la morte Ferdinand III' by Johann Heinrich Schmelzer (1620-1680).
Marelize Gerber sang the soprano arias with a good sense of style, a solid technique and a very personal timbre.
The instrumentalists played as a well established team. This ensemble consisting of Stefan Plewniak and Annegret Hoffmann Violin, Sara Mosetti Viola, Lucia Krommer Viola da gamba and Martin Horvath Violone as well as Peter Peinstingl, should be heard very soon again."
